Pegasus the Clothes Horse
“Now Pegasus Maximus found a good friend
A girl called Fiadh, who was at her wit’s end
When a new tumbledryer came in from the cold
And her best pal Peg was called junk and old”
Fiadh has the perfect family- Mammy and her delicious jam, Mum and her magical yew stick, the best bedtime stories ever, and a magical clothes horse called Pegasus for endless adventures. Then one day, a delivery arrives that will change everything…
Pegasus the Clothes Horse is a new play by Wexford-based Alison Ní Mháirtín, brimming with wonder and play. Irish language, music and mythology combine with puppetry, opera and some very silly socks to create an epic journey from a young girl’s own house to the National Opera House.
We are delighted to be producing this piece at the National Opera House in Wexford in April 2024. The NOH have hosted development for the show in 2022 and 2023, and we are delighted to be working with them to further their goals of presenting more work for young people. It also supports our goals to allow artists to work locally- writer Alison lives and works in Wexford, as do many other members of the team.
Alison first worked with us in 2020, when she was commissioned to write an audio story as part of our very first season of Super Paua Stories. Since then she has written several more audio stories, was an associate artist of the company in 2022, and has been working with our team on some of our Irish-language projects. It has been very exciting to see the piece develop over a significant period of time, with dramaturgical support from Em Ball, as well as invaluable input from performers. After all, how do you puppet and animate a clothes horse to become a child’s best friend? That’s what we set out to discover!
